Abstract:
1) The experimental nuclear physics group at Uppsala University is involved in the BESIII experiment located in China one the BEPCII collider. One of the main responsibilities of the group is the analysis of the big data samples collated for various runs. Over the years there was a lot of effort applied to develop sufficient tools to extract the signal from raw detector data. Yet still removing all of the unwanted contributions in the sample (usually referred as background) remains a challenge and some of the commonly known methods based on standard selection criteria tend to fail.In modern day physics a lot of experiments applies different commercially know computing techniques to extract ever smaller signals in ever larger data sets with the maximum possible efficacy. The goal of this presentation is to show an application of modern neural network techniques in order to separate the signal of interest form background at the final stage of the analysis
2) HADES is a detector focused on spectroscopy of e+e- pairs and charged hadrons produced in proton, pion and heavy ion induced reactions in a 1-3.5 GeV kinetic beam energy. The detector is set-up at GSI Darmstadt on the SIS18 accelerator. The focus of the experiment is to investigate properties of dense nuclear matter created in the course of heavy ion collisions. Since conclusions on in-medium effects rely strongly on the understanding of hadron properties in vacuum and their production mechanism in nucleon-nucleon collisions a complementary program focusing on e+e-, in elementary collisions is also in progress. In this talk a detailed overview of the HADES physics program will be presented with focus on recent results from heavy ion and nucleon- nucleon collisions. In the second part the PANDA@HADES upgrade and foreseen physics program will be discussed with the emphasis of the Uppsala University hadron group involvement.
